A Regional Collaboration to Promote Literacy
Appalachia Reads has been providing resources, training and networking services for community literacy programs in the 29-county region of Appalachian Ohio since 2003. With funding from The Verizon Foundation and Ohio University, Appalachia Reads is striving to positively impact the availability and quality of literacy services and foster collaboration among literacy providers across the Appalachian Region.
Appalachia Reads engages early childhood, K-12 and adult education, and community-based literacy programs in an effort to generate public awareness, expand resources and strengthen the capacity of providers serving learners of all ages.
Mission
To promote and strengthen the work of literacy providers in Appalachian Ohio while serving as a central resource and advocate for youth, adult and family literacy efforts.
Goals
Appalachia Reads will focus on providing literacy programs with specialized professional training and resources.
Appalachia Reads will serve as a catalyst for literacy initiatives in the Appalachian region through collaboration with local, regional and national organizations.
What we do
Provide professional development, training opportunities and resources for literacy providers, including certification for literacy tutors.
Promote literacy events by providing resources and materials to encourage participation by literacy providers.
Host quarterly literacy network provider meetings to foster collaboration and support among providers.
Maintain online directory of literacy programs.
Maintain and establish partnerships with local, regional and national organizations to maximize use of literacy services and resources.
